Who's most at risk?

You may be at higher risk for COVID if you or someone you love are:

  • Over age 65
  • Living with an underlying medical condition such as:
    • Cancer, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, lung and breathing disorders, kidney problems, weakened immune system
  • Pregnant
  • Living in a long-term care facility or nursing home

How is it treated?

Because COVID-19 is a virus, it can't be treated with medicine like antibiotics, which work for bacterial infections. If you are diagnosed with COVID-19, you'll likely be treated with:

  • Rest
  • Increased water and fluid intake
  • Over-the-counter medications to relieve aches, pain, and fever
  • Supplemental oxygen for severe infections

How do I prevent it?

Help prevent the spread of COVID-19 by:

  • Not touching your face
  • Covering your mouth and nose if you sneeze or cough
  • Washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds at a time (singing the "Happy Birthday" song twice)
  • Using alcohol-based hand sanitizer if you don't have access to soap and water
  • Not spending time with people who are sick or don't feel well
  • Cleaning surfaces frequently, including counters, lightswitches, doorknobs, remote controls, and cell phones
  • Avoiding public spaces if you're sick or don't feel well
  • Avoiding crowds or keeping a 6-foot distance between you and others in public

How does it spread?

COVID-19 is easy to share and spread. It's often transmitted:

  • Through the air by coughing or sneezing
  • Touching something with the virus on it, like a surface or object
  • Close personal contact, such as touching, kissing, hugging, or handshaking

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of COVID-19 by:

  • Shortness of breath
  • High temperature, often over 100-degrees F
  • A new, dry cough...

COVID-19 is a new illness that impacts your lungs and breathing. It's known as a coronavirus disease (COVID) that started in late 2019.

Coronavirus are a large family of viruses that cause illnesses ranging from common cold-like symptoms to more severe cases, like pneumonia or influenza (the flu).
